SymRelay Features

Where you need to link existing communications systems to your LAN or new communications network , SymRelay is your low cost solution. This small protocol converter can be tailored to fit your specific environment, using existing Symicron libraries of proven solutions. It is difficult to be specific about its exact application as it has been designed for flexibility to match your exact requirement.

SymRelay is targeted as a Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) unit. A rack mounted multi unit is also available where a conversion of a number of streams is needed at your central site.

SymRelay fits well into a network where unified communications is needed and a varied selection of legacy communication equipment exists. For example it could allow a new routed TCP/IP network to interface to an existing population of X.25 terminals. Another example is where an estate of asynchronously connected modems needs to migrate seamlessly via the Internet. There are numerous situations when an application needs to think it is talking to its remote sites (as it always has), and yet the underlying network has been updated for improved costs, efficiency etc.

SymRelay can operate in a variety of ways.

It can Relay data - taking the data content from one protocol and imbedding it into another. It can Route data - selecting IP traffic and directing it to a remote site over a different network.
It can Imbed data - taking the data stream (data and protocol) and carrying it over another network.
It can Translate data - taking the data content and altering it to suit its destination.
It can Broadcast data - replicating a data message to a number of terminals where it can also be used to Cluster those terminals, acting as a terminal server.

SymRelay also has advanced extensions to allow Internet access, VPN linkage, and email Relay as well as adding a limited security firewall for your remote sites. The USB port can interface SymRelay to be used as a gateway to an ADSL modem.

Physical Interfaces available with SymRelay are:

  • LAN 100 base T interface
  • USB Universal Serial Bus - either Slave or Master operation
  • ISDN2 Integrated Systems Digital Network (as a digital modem)
  • V.11 Synchronous data interface
  • V.24 Synchronous or Asynchronous data interface - DCE or DTE operation

Of particular importance is the ability to remotely connect to SymRelay, without a directly connected terminal. Once the protected login to it has occurred, Stats and history can be interrogated and configurations changed from a central site.

Simple Communication for the Developer

As an application developer you need to communicate data remotely. Options available to you, as system designer, are to integrate a comms card with O/S driver or put in a full Router network. Now you have a new option. Using SymRelay you can just send your data to an IP socket and it's transferred to your remote destination in whatever networking protocol you need. This is particularly useful where older networks are retained and your PC is upgrading in speed and Operating System. It's a quick solution.

Important Benefits:

  • You do not need to have extensive comms. knowledge to implement a communicating application.
  • Your interface to the network is via an easy straightforward IP connection (standard O/S interface).
  • Debugging of your application can be done locally using your LAN - as the full comms emulation.
  • Time-to-implement is dramatically reduced and project risks minimised (comms is always high risk).
  • The resulting solution is futureproof against Operating System upgrades or a change to another O/S.
  • Implementing SymRelay as a stand alone comms unit removes the real time aspects from your system.
  • Complex Fault finding is simplified as comms is split, and ring-fenced, from the application or server.
  • Subsequent system maintenance is made easier than with an imbedded communications card.
  • SymRelay has been designed as a low cost unit typically replacing a TA or Router.
  • Symicron have decades of expertise in communications and you are leaning on this experience.
