SYMICRON AT ODDS WITH MAJOR ISPs OVER LEASED LINE INTERNET ACCESS COSTS

Symicron Computer Communications Ltd, the UK's leading manufacturer of ISDN systems, believes that companies are being brainwashed into thinking that a leased line is the right solution for Internet access if their usage exceeds 2-4 hours per day. Customers are paying at least £650 per month for leased lines that could be better served with ISDN lines on a £10 per month service. According to Symicron's calculations, based on their figures for LAN access on dialup ISDN, it is possible to save £4000 per year if the line is being used 8 continuous hours per day at 64k, compared to a Demon leased line account. Even with 24 hours a day usage, ISDN saves the user money.

With Symicron's Single IP working technology and ISDN, multiple LAN users can have simultaneous access to both Internet and Email by using a low cost, £10 a month, single user ISDN service from their ISP. This feature can dramatically reduce the cost of the Internet Service from thousands of pounds to £120 per annum.

Steve White, Symicron Computer Communications' Marketing Manager states, "ISDN can provide instantaneous connection for your whole LAN, with the advantage that you pay only for what you use, and gives an additional 64k of bandwidth on demand, meeting the need of that peak requirement. Most customers are never given the true facts about ISDN as it is in the interests of the ISP to sell an expensive leased line account."

"Symicron's ISDN Internet Access Router provides simultaneous Internet access to a LAN using a single IP address, supporting 64k and 128k connections. ISDN has virtually instantaneous connection, giving seamless operation to the user - exactly like having a fixed (leased line) connection."

"The Internet Access Router drops the line after 30 seconds of inactivity and instantly reconnects on reactivity. This means that telephone charges are kept to an absolute minimum, unlike modems where call charges are accrued during the whole period, and the connection is extremely slow and unreliable. ISDN is, therefore, an extremely cost-effective alternative to a leased line where connection and rental charges are very high - at least £650 per month."

"The recent reductions in BT ISDN tariffing, combined with the Single IP working scheme, mean that Internet Access can now be offered extremely cost effectively to all LAN users within an organisation. This will have the effect of providing major growth in the usage of the Internet by small to medium enterprises."

Symicron also claim that single IP working could be of great advantage to the ISPs, as it avoids the recent limitations in worldwide availability of TCP/IP class C addresses. Dynamic IP allocation per call diminishes the TCP/IP addressing range ISPs were previously forced to reserve per LAN. It also results in a significant reduction in administration for the ISP and the LAN manager.

Using Single IP working, the Internet addressing scheme is totally divorced from the LAN addresses, presenting a total firewall against incoming LAN access. The Access Server can be implemented alongside an existing firewall without compromising LAN integrity for Internet access.

THE FACTS

Below are typical savings using Symicron's ISDN Internet Access Server on a single IP account against a Demon 64k leased line account. Savings increase considerably for 128k access. ISDN call costs are based on a standard 260 working days / year, and show BT's business option 2 discount structure. Prices include setup costs for both leased line and ISDN installation / rental. Hardware costs for both options are similar.

ISDN base prices are as follows:-

Line Installation £500
Rental £540
Less Call Allowance £-355
Internet Access Account £140
