SYMICRON GETS GRAVESHAM COUNCIL ON-LINE WITH COMPLETE INTERNET SERVICE

In a £xxxxx contract, Symicron Computer Communications Ltd, the UK's leading manufacturer of ISDN systems, have provided the equipment and expertise to enable Gravesham Borough Council to connect their Civic Centre Network of approximately 300 users to the Internet for Web browsing and Internet e-mail, with Internet compliance for their Lotus CC Mail internal e-mail system, which will be used in conjunction with a new domain name. In addition the Council has been able to attach 2 remote LANs to their main Civic Centre LAN.

Symicron's Internet Products Division were able to offer sound communications advice, besides being able to provide a total one-stop-solution including the ISDN routers, ISDN lines, Internet Service Provision, e-mail gateway and registration of the Council's domain name.

The solution uses ISDN based 'on demand' technology, based around Symicron's Internet Access Server incorporating 'Line Inactivity Feature' which disconnects after 30 seconds of inactivity and provides a seamless reconnection when required, thus keeping call costs to a minimum.

Symicron have installed an Internet Access Server which is attached to the 10 Base-T network, allowing users with authorisation, access to the Internet for Web browsing from anywhere on the LAN. The Internet Access Server (IAS) was configured for single IP working, providing Internet access via a low cost single user account, and allowing the Council's existing non-compliant IP address structure to be used, eliminating any disruption to the LAN.

A TFS Mail Gateway was installed to seamlessly convert the existing CC Mail messages to an Internet protocol, allowing internal e-mail to be transported under the POP3 protocol for forwarding to any Internet e-mail account around the globe.

The requested Domain name "gravesham.gov.uk" was registered. Using mail forwarding, any mail addressed to the council's domain is placed in the council's mailbox. The mail is frequently collected by the internal mail server and distributed across the LAN.

The two remote sites are connected by an ISDN-2 line and ISDN Remote Access Router at each location. This will run TCP/IP to the central site, allowing RAS connectivity to the Council's Intranet server.

Now the network is fully installed the Council will have a fully switched, Internet compliant system, which gives the numerous users a fast, efficient, desktop information service.
